Stanley William Hayter was an English painter and printmaker associated in the 1930s with Surrealism and from 1940 onward with Abstract Expressionism.

In 1927 Hayter founded Atelier 17. Renown Printmaking Group.

Originally located in rue Molin Vert, the Ateliers name was derived from it’s later location at 17 rue Campagne Premiere, Paris. In 1939 it suspended it’s activities in Paris and moved to New York. There it became a meeting place for both European and American artists. The atelier is best know for it’s many celebrated artists who worked there and were encouraged by Hayter’s insistence that printmaking need not be just a form of reproduction, but also a form of creative expression.  Since his death in 1988, it has been known as Atelier Contrepoint.
