This is a very interesting American piece of Mid-century Modern furniture by respected manufacturer American of Martinsville. Crafted of walnut, it is something of a cross-over design fusing American MCM with Danish Modern. It offers wonderful storage with all its deep drawers. The dresser is one piece, but divided visually between top and bottom sections.
Above, three drawers are hidden behind two folding doors that have a round brass knob on each panel; there is a subtle Asian quality to the simplicity of the design. Below, there are two drawers with rectangular cut-outs for pulls – a nod to the Danish Modern designs that were being introduced at the time in the United States.
The walnut on this dresser is gorgeous and has been carefully placed on the front of the piece, with vertical graining on the top and horizontal graining on the bottom. The minimalist design puts almost all the focus on the wood. The dresser sits up on slightly splayed legs and a wonderful stretcher completes the look.
Where you want storage that does not look too “bedroom-y” this is the piece. It could easily be at the end of a hall to store blankets, or in a child’s room to handle clothes, books and small toys. A versatile design at ease in many rooms of the house and built to last another sixty years, thanks to good old-fashioned American craftsmanship.
