“Carnival” Artwork by Susan Gertrude Schell of ‘The Philadelphia Ten’

SOLD -- $4850

Featured at Kensington.

Here is a wonderful painting by listed artist Susan Gertrude Schell, depicting an afternoon at a Carnival, a truly American scene. Schell (1891-1970) was a member of the Philadelphia Ten, a group of women who studied at Philadelphia art schools and banded together at a time when it was difficult for female artists to find opportunities to exhibit their work. The Philadelphia Ten exhibited between 1917 and 1945 at major museums and galleries on the east coast to critical acclaim.

This oil on canvas painting probably dates to the ’30s. It is signed in the lower right hand corner. The paint has been applied in a somewhat thickly textured manner. It is a very colorful, lively and cheerful scene, evocative of a simpler time.
